Shama Baqir

Shama Baqir is a professional climber and licensed trekking guide from Shimshal Valley, Hunza, with 11 years of experience across Gilgit-Baltistan. She holds an MSc in Tourism and Hospitality Management and is the founder of her own tour company. A pioneer for women in a field where few females worked, she has funded every 6000m and 7000m summit from her own savings. Her mission is to promote sustainable tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan and bring more mountain girls into adventure tourism.

About Me

I proudly come from Shimshal Valley in Hunza, one of the most remote and highest settlements in Pakistan, known as the valley of mountaineers. When I started guiding, there were almost no women in the trekking field, and the first five years were extremely difficult. I saved from my guiding income to pursue climbing, with no sponsors. Today I run my own tour company, organize winter sports activities in remote Hunza valleys, and work as a freelance guide with renowned national and international companies.

Mission

My mission is twofold: to promote the soft image and sustainable tourism of Gilgit-Baltistan to the world, and to empower girls from the mountains to enter adventure tourism, the main source of income and development for our region.
