Umer Sharif passed away in Nuremberg, Germany, on 2 October 2021 at the age of 66 while receiving medical treatment. His death prompted widespread tributes across Pakistan and India.

Following his death in Germany, his body was brought back to Pakistan and he was laid to rest at the Abdullah Shah Ghazi graveyard in Clifton, Karachi.

Umer Sharif's health deteriorated considerably following a prolonged period of illness. The Sindh government later supported arrangements for his overseas medical treatment.
